The Reason for the Season
My best friend, Sammie Jo, worships at First Baptist in Henderson. She shared a recent sermon that her pastor gave. And it is too good for me to not share. Forgive me if I get some of the specifics wrong…the gist is still the same!
Evidently, he started by talking about how at every Christmas gathering, there is typically some black sheep or dysfunctional family member. I am pretty sure every single family has someone that doesn’t really fit in…and we all could use some perspective or advice on how to deal with awkward or frustrating situations.
Anyway, after he talked about that, the pastor passed out stickers for everyone to help them be reminded about the reason for the season…but it wasn’t the reason you think. The stickers didn’t say that Jesus is the reason for the season. The stickers said, “YOU are the reason for the season.”
He went on to explain that the reason Christ was born was for you, for me, for us. And that during the holidays…and really every other time…we need to remember that Christ came to save us…us and those dysfunctional, black sheep family members.
(Speaking of black sheep…do black sheep know they are black sheep? I might very well be the crazy kid at the table for family functions. Actually…I can definitely say I am the crazy kid! I just have such a wonderful family they always make me feel like I am completely fine!)
